September 1, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians/Grandparents/and Interested Citizens:

Welcome Back Everyone! I am not sure where the summer break went. It is hard to believe that September is upon us! I hope you all were able to take advantage of some of the beautiful summer weather we had as we are now transitioning to Fall and a busy school year.

We will do our best to send out a weekly newsletter throughout the year. Friday will be our target date for most newsletters. The principal and vice principal assist in the writing of this letter to inform you of noteworthy topics.

Open House: Let us begin by recognizing all the parents and families who attended Open House. It was a joy to see so many happy faces as students met with their respective teachers and parents visited classrooms and other areas of the school. Parent and community participation was exceptional and we thank you for making this evening such a success. I loved looking at all the creativity displayed on teacher bulletin boards! It was such a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

Custodial/Maintenance Recognition: It would be difficult not to notice the exceptional work that the maintenance and custodial staff performed in readying the building for students. We are appreciative and proud of the work they did. We can certainly see the pride they have in work they do. If you have a chance to say thank you, please do so.

Ad-Hoc Committee: At the last School Board meeting there was a presentation from a Richmond Ad-Hoc Education Committee charged with exploring a number of alternatives that may serve in educating their students in the future. We are but one of several options under consideration. This is an exploratory committee appointed by the Richmond Selectmen, and it is in its infancy stages. I have appointed a small committee to work with them. However, I want to make something as clear as I can. If, at any time the Winchester School District appears to be a preferred viable option for the town of Richmond, the School Board will establish a very open and transparent process that will include a new committee, or committees, and lots of parent and community input. If both communities agreed, it would take several years to implement and undergo a very complex process with approval required by the Department of Education, town votes, and so on. The purpose of this communication is simply to give you a heads-up.

Keene High Committee: The Winchester Keene High Committee is looking for parents of 8-12th graders, who are not working at the school, to serve on this committee. It meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 4:30 p.m. in the Winchester Superintendent’s office (SAU # 94). If interested, please call Marie at 239-8061 and if you do not get her in person please leave a message with your contact information. Thank you for considering this committee.

Head Lice Policy: This is just a reminder that the School Board policy requires a head lice check upon the return of students from summer vacation. Checks will happen soon.

Fire Lane and Dismissal: Thank you for your flexibility and cooperation with the front parking lot change. We are working to be sure that the Fire Lane is always kept clear. You can assist us by parking in one of the visitor spots or waiting the pick-up/drop-off lane if you visit us during the day.

School Pictures: Students will have their pictures taken on September 12. Forms were sent home this week. Remind them to bring their smiles!

PTA: If you are not a member of the PTA and would like to join, membership is only $7. Their booth was very busy during Open House, so you might have had a chance to sign-up. If interested, they meet on the second Monday of each month at 6:00, in the library. The first meeting is September 11.  I will be asking the Officers of the PTA for an opportunity to introduce myself at one of their meetings and address any topics or questions you may have. The PTA is another great opportunity to be engaged in your child(ren)’s school.

We look forward to working with you in the coming year. Remember, Monday is a holiday and school is closed.
