Mathematics at the Winchester School
The Winchester School is one of the hundreds of schools across the country that are using Everyday Mathematics as their math curriculum for grades K-6. This program was developed through the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project in order to enable children in elementary grades to learn more mathematical content and become life-long mathematical thinkers. Research has shown us that in general, U.S. students learn much less mathematics than students in other countries, and that they are capable of learning more mathematics in a richer curriculum.
The Everyday Mathematics program includes high expectations for all students, and exposes children to multiple methods and strategies for problem solving. Some of these strategies may be different from the way many of us learned math, but they have been proven by research to be effective! The curriculum also includes a variety of games that children play during class time that are specifically designed to reinforce math skills. By becoming a part of everyday work and play, these ideas gradually shape children's ways of thinking about mathematics and foster the development of mathematical intuition and understanding. After the strong math program in grades K-6, 7th and 8th graders are ready for our middle school math curriculum. Middle Grades Mathematics, published by Prentice Hall, is developed specifically for middle-grades students. It is a student-centered program that incorporates active learning and problem solving. The program uses real-life situations to help students experience math now. For more information, click on http://www.phschool.com/atschool/MGM/
