Mrs. Franklin’s Kindergarten News

May 1, 2008

Dear Parents,

Soon we will begin the tenth and final Houghton Mifflin literacy theme “Animals Around.” We continue to do word work each morning using letter, picture, and word cards.  The students are so proficient at this that I use more and more word cards, where Houghton Mifflin would use picture cards.  The word work time is quick paced and exciting at times.  I think the students find it great fun, because they control the cards in the various activities. Reading “running records” and the Houghton Mifflin tests are sent home to you on a weekly basis in their folders.

A notable event is coming in May. We will take a field trip on the Green Mountain Flyer Train, on _________________.  A formal permission slip will be coming home, to be signed and returned.  The information must be filled out in detail. Please plan to afford a cost of about five dollars per student/chaperone to be sent in with the permission slip.  I hope I am giving you enough notice to set aside the funds.  No money is needed on the actual day of the field trip, as we do not go into the Green Mountain Railroad’s gift shop.  I will ask for chaperones on the permission slip. Keep in mind there are no bathrooms on the train.  There is one emergency “potty” for the entire train.

Please note, on the last day of school in June, there will be a Kindergarten Celebration at 9:00am. It takes about half an hour to forty-five minutes, including refreshments.  Students go home with their parents following the celebration. More details are yet to come. The date depends on the final number of snow days and half snow days.  I will send it as soon as possible.  At this time, the last day of school is June 20th.

Water bottles are always welcome in my classroom, especially when the warm weather arrives. Please put your child’s name on water bottles and sun hats.  Please, no flip flops!  Flip flop shoes offer no protection under heavy kindergarten chairs or on the playground.  Thank you for your help in this.  Please send your child to school in socks and sneakers. Sandals are ok, but not on gym day. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Franklin
