Winchester Band Practicing Policy

It is important and expected that all band students practice their instruments at home in order to prepare for lessons and rehearsals.

I expect 15 minutes of practice per day, 5 days a week as a starting goal for beginners.   We will work together in lessons to develop a practicing routine, and solve practicing problems.

Why practice?  Playing an instrument is a physical activity, like a sport.  So, as in sports, we must practice in order to develop coordination and muscle memory.  Being in band is also like being on a team; we must work together in order to get the best sound possible.  If you come to class without practicing at home, you will be letting down your teammates!  Here are some practicing tips to help you get started:

·         Remember, what you accomplish while you practice is much more important that the number of minutes.   Always work with a goal in mind.  Some examples of practicing goals include:

“Today I will learn the high notes in the third line.”

“Today I will play the solo with a clear tone.”

“Today I will count and tap the rhythm on the second page.”

·         Find a “practice spot” in your house where you will not be interrupted.  Set up your music stand there.

·         Start and end your practice with something fun that you love to play.  In the middle, play some scales, long tones, or exercises to help you develop technique.  Then, spend some time working on the hard parts of the music that challenge you.  Write down or circle any questions that you have, so we can answer them in lessons.

·         Invite a friend over, and practice together

·         Put together a concert for your family or neighbors, or sign up to play for all school meeting!  Having a goal or performance to prepare for can be helpful in motivating musicians to practice.

·         If you have trouble practicing, sign up with me for an extra lesson.  I would be happy to practice with you and help you get in to a practice routine.
