April 6, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians/Grandparents/and Interested Citizens:

Below are a few informational items:

Our school librarian, Kate Michaud, will be serving as our Crossing Guard for the remainder of the school year. We are fortunate that she is willing to assume this responsibility. George Whittle had such an energetic and friendly approach to greeting children each morning and assisting them across the street safely. Kate is filling this assignment with the same approach… Huge smile, friendly, gentle wave! George would be proud of her!

Winchester School Drama Program – The NH Dance Institute – Recently staff and students enjoyed a wonderful experience learning both dance and drama. Their efforts were rewarded in an amazing performance. Artistic Director and choreographer, Kristin Leach, is back! This time, she will be working with 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The drama/dance program is entitled “Stronger”. A permission form has been sent home and practice will begin Thursday, April 12th. The grand finale performance will be May 10th! Don’t miss this opportunity for your child to be a part of something special. This program is sponsored by We’ve Got Your Back.

Spring Sports:  The Sports Schedule has been finalized and should be on the Website next week.

Last Day of School – A recurring question is “exactly when is the last day of school?” If there are no more school cancellations, the last for students is Wednesday, June 20th. There are some conversations occurring about reducing the number of days for students and modifying the instructional day in the middle school grades to include more time on instruction to meet Department of Education hourly requirements without adding so many make-up days. Elementary students meet this requirement because they required fewer hours. More information will be forthcoming if this appears to be a viable option.

Title I Evaluation Meetings - On Tuesdays, April 10th at 7:30 a.m. and April 17th at 3:30 p.m., there will be evaluation meetings to examine the current program and identify needs for next year. Everyone is invited and we are hopeful many parents will attend. Meetings will be held in the Library.

Keene High School Delays/Winchester Normal Start – We are in the process of exploring the possibilities of the Winchester School District having a normal start time even when Keene High School calls for a two-hour delay. It appears there may be some days that the road conditions and amount of snow is different in Winchester compared to Keene. We thought that sharing buses did not allow this to happen. However, preliminary research suggests this might be possible. There may be the need for a few (2 – 6) high school students to ride an elementary bus to make this happen. More research needs to be done. However, this may be an option for next year.

Have a great weekend!

Respectfully,

Dr. Genovese, M. Duprey, V. Carey
