Parents/Guardians/Grandparents/and Interested Citizens:
We transitioned into the New Year during
the first two weeks of school by completing some major endeavors and
establishing new ones. Below are a few informational items.
Director of Student Services – We are pleased to announce that Anita
McDowell has been appointed as the Director of Student Services. She comes to
the District with a wealth of experience, knowledge and skill in a variety of
areas that will serve the needs of our children. As a former teacher, Director
of Special Services, and Learning Specialist, she will be able to make
immediate contributions to our Special Education programs. Please join me in
Transition to High
School - Eighth grade students met with the principal of Keene High School, Mr.
Jim Logan, and the Director of Guidance, Kim Baker, to review the Program of
Studies and begin to plan their academic schedule for next year A parent night
is being planned later in January. More information will follow. We encourage
parents to talk about potential courses for next year.
Keene Late Bus – The Winchester School Board provides for
a late bus on Wednesdays so students can participate in clubs, receive extra
help, engage in library research and enjoy other after school activities. It
departs around 5:15 pm. It has come to our attention that some
students may not be aware that this is available to them. The Keene principal
will get the word out to them and we are hopeful this communication will get
the word out to you as well.
Mobile APP. For your convenience,
access to our website is provided via a mobile app as well. Go to the Apple
Store or Google Play store, there are icons located on the bottom of our
website. Click on the one that pertains to your phone and install it. You will
have a tiger paw icon appear on your phone… and that gets you to our Website. – Efforts
are underway to update our website to provide more timely information.
Budget – The Management Team has
been working on this since November. It is a long process. This week, the
Budget Committee held a Public Hearing on the Proposed FY 19 budget. It has
been a collaborative process and both the School Board and the Budget Committee
are in agreement on money Articles. The next Newsletter will provide specifics
and this information will also be posted on the District Website.
Development Opportunities – Today
was an early release day for students. The staff was engaged in learning how to
access technologies that support speech to text features to assist our
students. Mr. Pymm, our computer teacher, assisted the staff. Following that
presentation there was an update on NH laws regarding child protection and
mandatory reporting. This information helps our staff to be more comfortable
with their related responsibilities, as they support all our children.
No School Monday
– There is no school on Monday,
January 15, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. School resumes with a
full day on Tuesday.
Thank you for taking
the time to review this Newsletter. We look forward to working with you all in
the coming months.
