Dear Parents, Guardians, Grandparents, and Interested Citizens:

Special Dismal Today – The preparation work for the parking lot behind the school began a day early. We were preparing for Monday. This required a special dismissal process, whereby, students were dismissed in front of the school in two groups. The first dismissal involved walkers, students that are picked up early, Access students and our soccer students.

We began this dismissal at 3:10 p.m. Once this group was dismissed, we had the buses pull up in front of the school and then announced the dismissal of all bus students around 3:20. Parents who arrived late had to wait to pick-up their children until all busses were loaded and departed. I cannot thank the parents enough for your patience as we worked through this process. One glitch was the van buses also pulled in from of the school instead of their usual area and this will be corrected for Monday’s drop off and pick-up.

Today was another example of our staff’s commitment to nurturing students and working together for their safety. Many teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff and the administration pitched in to make this process go as smoothly as possible. I was so proud today to witness this united effort on behalf of students. It is one of the reasons I was attracted to the Winchester School District.

I also want to recognize the students for realizing this was a very unique situation, and they helped make it go as smoothly as possible by leaving the building and boarding the buses in an orderly manner. So what did we learn today and what can you expect on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday?

Morning Drop Off - Drop off in the morning will be the same as before, except, if a bus has its red flashing lights on, you will need to wait until it departs.

In the Afternoon - We will be dismissing all students who do not ride a bus 5 minutes earlier than usual (3:10 p.m. to 3:15 pm. We ask that parents who are picking up children do so in an efficient manner and leave the area promptly. This will allow us to begin the boarding of buses as soon as possible. If the buses are already in place and their flashing lights are on, we will have you wait a few minutes until all students are safely boarded.

We will likely use the church parking lot as a staging area so buses can line up by letter before they proceed up Parker Street. This will help students in the boarding process. All “small buses” or vans will enter and exit as they normally do.

Benefit to Paving the Back of the School – This project has several benefits. First, classroom exits doors that are not level with the ground will be paved to allow wheel chair access. Second, the walkway entrance next to the gym and to the Elementary Glass Entrance will be paved, creating a safer walkway. Third, middle school students, who do not have an area to socialize and play, will have an area to stretch their legs and play a bit. We are planning to put up a few basketball hoops and section off this area during the day after buses leave. Fourth, plowing this area in the winter will also be much easier.

Let’s all work together to make this project a success. Thank you all for taking the time to read this Newsletter. Enjoy your weekend.

Respectfully,

Alan D. Genovese, Ed. D.

Interim Superintendent
